Audio Levels 101 – All You Need Is LUFS

What the heck is dBFS, true peak, RMS, integrated loudness and LUFS? Why do I need to know these strange appellations? As a professional sound designer you will eventually stumble across technical terms referring to audio levels and loudness. A customer might tell you: “we need a track with an integrated loudness of -23 LUFS, a dynamic range of ≤15 LU and a true peak of max -1 dBTP”. Even if you’ve been producing audio for a few years you might be thinking: “huuuuuh…?”. By now you’ve probably heard about the loudness war, and we all know what it sounds […] Read more »

Hi Alexey! Thanks for your time. First, can you tell us a little bit about your background. Where are you from and how did you start creating music? I live in the city of Barnaul – Altai is the Southwest of Siberia. I will tell you honestly – I did not study at any music school. Next, I started doing music for games and that […] Read more »

Sound Designer Spotlight: Luca Tomassini (Jontom)

Hey Jontom! Thanks for this interview with us. First of all, you are known as Ukulele Master. How did this happen, when did you start playing Ukulele to become a master of it? I started to play the uke about 6 or 7 years ago… Honestly, I can’t exactly remember! I guess I took a different approach to the instrument because unlike many others fascinated by the easiness and portability, I was charmed by the challenge behind four strings and two octaves. After having watched Jake Shimabukuro performing his rendition of “While my guitar gently weeps” I felt the magic behind this instrument and so, that’s how […] Read more »

Can you tell us a little bit about your background. Where are you from and how did you end up creating music? I live in Brittany in France. I started writing songs and playing guitar, and soon I started a pop rock band in which I was the singer and songwriter. Little by little I’ve learned and started composing music for student film projects and short films. I began to realize what kind of sounds work in motion pictures. What kind […] Read more »
